The Proof of Concept trailer for 'No Gentle Goodnight'

Directed by Mark Holland, DoP Jack Kilpatrick, Written by Terence Caddick

No Gentle Goodnight

When a suicidal ex-special forces soldier returns to his crumbling Northern hometown, he expects nothing but ghosts and silence — and maybe the long fall from the bridge that’s haunted his life. But a shocking discovery halts his exit: he has a teenage son. And when that boy is left in a coma after a gang-related hit-and-run, David’s quiet goodbye turns into a savage reckoning.

What begins as a search for answers becomes something far more dangerous — a war for meaning in a town that’s long since stopped caring. As David spirals into grief and fury, he tears through a landscape of secrets, petty tyrants, and corrupt cops too bloated with apathy to see the truth.

Set against flickering streetlights, tower blocks, and decaying estates, No Gentle Goodnight blends gritty realism with dark surrealism, sudden violence, and pitch-black humour. It’s a bruising, poetic journey into trauma, silence, and the weight of working-class legacy.

The world is filled with butcher-shop philosophers, trenchcoat tyrants, twitchy henchmen, and broken helpers. And at the centre — one man, trying to decide if there’s anything left to fight for.

No Gentle Goodnight is the latest project from Sunny Runny Productions, in collaboration with Going Nowhere Productions, currently in development with local cast, crew, and businesses. A brutal, lyrical tale of grief, rage, and redemption — filmed in the bones of a forgotten Northern town.

No Gentle Goodnight blends social realism with poetic emotional depth, offering the power of Dead Man’s Shoes, County Lines, and The Selfish Giant while rooting itself authentically in Northern England.
It’s visually raw, emotionally charged, locally grounded, and built for strong festival impact.
